Geographic Regions and Area Codes in Virginia

Virginia is divided into eight distinct regions, each with its own unique demographic, social, economic, and geographic characteristics. These regions have evolved from a rural, agriculture-based economy to an urban, service-based economy. This shift has led to a more homogeneous demographic across both metro and rural areas. The state uses seven area codes to cover its extensive geographic regions:

  • 276 - Southwest corner of the state including Bristol, Galax, Martinsville, and Wytheville
  • 434 - Central and Southside Virginia including Charlottesville, Lynchburg, and Danville
  • 540 - Northwestern and Southwestern Virginia including Roanoke, Harrisonburg, and Winchester
  • 571 - Northern Virginia including Arlington and Alexandria
  • 703 - Northern Virginia including Fairfax and Falls Church
  • 757 - Southeastern Virginia including Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Newport News
  • 804 - Central Virginia including Richmond and Petersburg
